For a variety of reasons, this is a destination rightfully overshadowed by relaxing weekend getaways and extended road trips. In fact, I can confidently bet that if you Googled ‘the best day trips from Nairobi’, half the places you come across are simply not doable in a day. Forget about unrealistic suggestions of visiting Amboseli or Maasai Mara in a day – those are better suited for longer stays. 

Nevertheless, the day trip options, though limited, do exist. So, let’s delve into the eight best day trips from Nairobi that promise to satisfy your adventurous heart and cultural-seeking mind, and in true Kenyan fashion, ensure time well spent in lush settings.

One of my favourite things to do in Nairobi is visit the remarkable and oh-so-beautiful Kintengela Hot Glass studio. The charming, interactive space is an explosion of colour that allows visitors to witness skilled artisans creating stunning glass art pieces, try your hand at glassblowing under the guidance of experts, and buy gorgeous souvenirs as a reminder of a creative and memorable day trip. Turns out Murano is not the only place known for such talents and for appreciating perfect imperfections!

Drive Up To Limuru

Limuru, known for its vast tea plantations, delightful waterfall hikes and cool climate, is a charming town perfect for a day trip. If you’re lucky, and the weather permits, you can hike to the nearby waterfall and take a swim – so don’t forget to pack your swimsuits.

Hike The Picturesque Ngong Hills

If it’s not obvious enough yet, Kenya thrives in natural beauty and outdoor fun – and there is no better place to seek this out than in the Ngong Hills. Hike the seven panoramic hills for sweeping views over the Great Rift Valley and enjoy exercise in a spectacular setting.
