Six Attractions To Explore In Rugby, Warwickshire
My trip to Rugby, Warwickshire was spontaneous and a random choice, but I did come across six lovely attractions to explore in one day. I’m not too sure what I was expecting, but when I got off the train, I was a little surprised about how quaint the town really is. It seems like a place where everyone would know everyone, and within the few hours I had to explore, I enjoyed the little taste I got of the small-town life.
With massive rugby balls on almost every street, the place indeed prides itself on its long history with the popular sport. However, there is also much to see beyond rugby-related sites and monuments.
Travel and Accommodation In Rugby
The best way to get to Rugby, Warwickshire is by National Rail from any major travel hub such as London and Coventry. However, even though the town itself is small, a car is useful for those wishing to explore the greener parts of the region which lie on the outskirts, e.g. Draycote Water.
Six Amazing Attractions In Rugby
Here is a list of 6 attractions that are worth exploring in Rugby:
Rugby Art Gallery
The Rugby Art Gallery contains a small collection of beautiful art and incredible talents. I did not spend more than an hour inside, but it was nice to marvel at the exhibitions in a peaceful space.
Caldecott Park
Caldecott Park is a lovable urban green space with perfect lawns, stunning flowerbeds, swing sets and tall trees perfect for summer strolls and curbing anyone’s desire for a relaxing atmosphere.
Rugby Market
Enjoy a rummage through the daily market that takes place in the town’s centre. From food to flowers to clothes, shop locally and find all your essentials.
The Swift Valley Nature Reserve
Located on the appropriately named River Swift, Swift Valley Nature Reserve lies moments from the town centre, and is a conserved parcel of the old countryside. It has wet and dry woodland, marshes and pasture, making it one of the most beautiful places in the area to take long walks and be immersed in nature.
Rugby School and Museum
With ivy-covered walls and stunning architecture, the building is a spectacular sight exposing its age. The school was established in 1567 and is amongst England’s oldest independent schools.
Two theories explain the founding of rugby at this school: 1) when William Webb Ellis picked up the ball during a football match in 1823 and 2) when three Rugby School students drew up the sport’s first written rules in 1845.
You can tour the school and its grounds every Saturday.
Draycote Water
Draycote Water is a 650-acre reservoir where you can relish in long walks and bike rides around the shore or sail and windsurf on the water. It is also a cherished bird-watching paradise with over 100 different species, from red-necked grebes to barn Owls.
