How To Survive Long Haul Flights: Top Tips For Jet-Setters
Long haul flights can be both exciting and exhausting. The anticipation of reaching a far-off destination is thrilling, but it’s almost always combined with the dreaded, daunting hours in a combined space that most of us don’t love. Fortunately, with a little preparation and the right strategies, you can not only survive but thrive during long haul flights – and I promise, any tips I share are ones that I have tried and tested on numerous accounts, including an 18hr journey from London to Perth!
So, whether you’re a frequent flyer or a first-time traveller, these tips will help you not just survive, but thrive during your long journey. Besides, the flight is just small part of a beautiful adventure.
Seven Tips To Surviving Long Haul Flights
Dress for Comfort
Wearing comfortable clothing is crucial for long haul flights, so opt for loose-fitting, breathable attire and layers so you can easily adjust to changing cabin temperatures. Don’t forget to pack a pair of warm socks and a cosy sweater – both can be useful even when wrapped up in a blanket.
Slip-on shoes are a great choice for quickly removing and putting them back on during security checks or when you need to stretch your legs. However, I personally always travel in trainers/sneakers because sturdy footwear is necessary if you are running to catch connecting flights.
Choose Your Seat Wisely
Selecting the right seat can make a world of difference during a long flight. If you value legroom, consider booking an exit row or bulkhead seat. Window seats can provide a distracting view and a place to rest your head, while aisle seats offer easy access to the restroom and cabin crew. One of the best ways to decide what seat best suits your preferences is usually by flying often, but I also believe that most of the choice comes down to common sense.
PS. If you do not want to pay for your seats in advance, do your best to book you seats as soon as online checking opens so you have a wider selection to choose from.
Entertainment Is Key
Most airlines have incredible entertainment across movie and TV, but it’s also worth considering loading up your tablet with your favourite distraction or packing a few books in your carry on. I always find the latter to be the best way to help me sleep because screentime naturally forces you to stay awake when you shouldn’t be.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Airplanes can be incredibly dehydrating due to low humidity levels, so it’s essential to drink plenty of water throughout the flight to stay hydrated. Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol, as they can dehydrate you even more. If comfortable, considering putting on a face mask for at least 10 minutes of your journey as well – this will give your skin an instant boost of moisture!
Sleep Strategically
Jet lag is a common challenge when crossing multiple time zones, but it’s possible to combat this if you sleep strategically. Try to book flights that fall in line with you arriving in the destinations’ night-time or early morning. This way, you can force yourself to sleep on the flight, which will automatically allow you to adjust to your new time zone with little effort.
Pack Snacks
While long-haul flights offer a variety of food to choose from and truthfully, airline meals have improved significantly over the past few years, it’s always a good idea to bring some of your favourite snacks with you. You can go the healthy route with nuts and granola bars or raid duty-free from crisps and chocolates – I wouldn’t say no to any!
Go To An Airport Lounge
If you have access to or can afford to visit an airport lounge during your journey, I cannot recommend it enough! The delicious food, comfy seats and quiet from the hustle and bustle of regular airport life are not things I take for granted, and often give me peace of mind before my flight or in-between the connections.
