Free Things To Do In Royal Leamington Spa

Small towns are always serve as perfect destinations for affordable seasonal cheer. When the cold settles in and mulled wine starts flowing, joy spreads to even the biggest grinches on Santa’s wish list, while the warmth weather welcomes a familial atmosphere as strangers gather in parks and pubs to share the joys of sunlight. As such, there is no wrong time to explore, and Royal Leamington Spa should be on everyone’s list because there are so many beautiful free things to do in this quintessentially English town.

Leamington Spa achieved ‘Royal’ status in 1838 by Queen Victoria and is one of only 3 towns in the United Kingdom with a ‘Royal’ prefix, including Royal Tunbridge Wells and Royal Wootten Bassett. It lies in central England on the winding River Leam, and features striking Regency architecture and broad boulevards that are a wonderful reminder of the country’s evolving history.

Combining a treasure-trove of independent boutiques alongside high street brands, a great selection of eating experiences and a fun club scene due to the huge student population from the nearby University of Warwick, there is so much enjoy while visiting. Don’t forget, you can loose yourself in hours of mindless wandering in award-winning parks and panoramic hills, if serenity if what you’re after!

This blog post explores an itinerary for discovering seven free activities in Leamington Spa in one day, however, if you choose to stay longer, here are some great accommodation options, including:

Incredible Free Things To Do In Royal Leamington Spa

The Parade

Many towns in England have a parade or square for locals to gather, and Leamington Spa is no different. Lined with beautifully decorated restaurants, a variety of shops and seasonal trees, there is no better place to wander and experience the town’s vibrant atmosphere. Weekends in particular, pay witness to fantastic markets while the weekday nights come to life through the clubs and bars rammed with university students – so there is always something fun going on!

PS. my favourite restaurant in Leamingston Spa is La Copoola, however it is also one of the most popular so make sure to get your reservation well in advance.

If you’re not out for a meal and prefer a drink, head over to Cenu Cacau, located just off Regent Street, for the best hot chocolate in town. Using traditional Aztec methods to make chocolate, it is paradise for those who love sweet treats, and is the first “bean to bar” chocolate shop in the West Midlands.

Jephson Gardens

At the edge of the Parade lies Leamington Spa’s most popular park – Jephson Gardens. The beautiful collection of formal gardens and open green space is scenic not matter the time of year and is perfect of wandering in tranquility.

The warmer months definitely draw larger crowds due to the occasional concerts and incredible water sporting opportunities on the boating lake, while the winter enjoys visitors to The Glasshouse when chasing warmth amongst lush surroundings.

If you’re an early riser, I highly recommend make your way to the gardens around sunrise to enjoy the fountains and waking geese and swans in their most peaceful state.

Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum

The city’s art gallery and museum in located within the Royal Pump Rooms and displays a variety of permanent and temporary exhibits. Alongside the gorgeous art, there are regularly held events for visitors of all ages – including craft studios and workshops on unique things like Lino print.

Chesterton Windmill

Built in the 1600s, the iconic feature of Medieval England is located in a field a short drive from the city centre, and offers spectacular views of the countryside on clear days. The windmill is definitely the place to be for a summer sunset, but is just as lovely if you are lucky to catch some snow. Driving down to this secluded spot is one my favourite things to do in Leamington Spa and sometimes, its worth carrying a picnic with you.

Hike Up Newbold Comyn

Located at the eastern of Leamington Spa, Newbold Comyn is 300 acres of lush park space dominated by tall trees and high peaks that provide panoramic views of Warwickshire. Due to its location away from the town centre, its often less crowded and is another place offering some of the most stunning sunsets I’ve witnessed in England.

Leamington Spa Christmas Light Switch On

The Christmas Light Switch On is not only the best of the free activities in Leamington Spa, it is the town’s most festive event, and takes place every November. Along with fantastic live music and food markets, the event also hosts fun carnival games and rides for all ages. It’s a great night out and the perfect away to kick off the holiday season. What’s makes the Leamington Spa Christmas Light Switch On so special is the warm feeling you get, as though you are part of a large family gathering, which is non-existent in larger cities. It highlights the wonderful small-town feel and I would be so bold as to say that it reminds me Hallmark movies.
