Fabulous Free Things To Do In Monaco

Monaco Port Hercule

Lying along the Cote d’Azur but independent of France, the state of Monaco is 200 ha of class and fascination. The billionaires’ playground radiates affluence from world-famous casinos, iconic car races, yacht-filled docks and incredible architecture and lives up to every bit of its allure. However, amidst the black credit cards and million-euro cheques lies a fun reality – the country is a lovely place for ordinary travellers to explore, and there are quite a few affordable and free things to do in Monaco.

A day trip to Monaco from nearby cities such as Nice and Cannes is one the most popular routes along this southern coast and should be part of everyone’s French Riviera itinerary. On the surface, the city doesn’t look anything unbelievably out of the ordinary, but there is something in the air that makes you feel that you are somewhere extraordinary – and rightfully so because there is no place like it.

Travel and Accommodation In Monaco

The easiest way to get to Monaco is by hopping on the frequent trains from nearby cities and towns on the French Riviera including Nice, Menton, Cannes and Antibes.

Return tickets from Nice cost around 8 euros and can be bought on Trainline or at Nice-Ville Station. The regular train from Nice to Monaco takes 25 minutes, although a faster train cuts the journey down to 15 minutes.

Monte Carlo Casino

Easily considered the landmark of Monaco, the Monte Carlo Casino is the epitome of everything the city represents but is also one the most lavish example of Belle Époque architecture in Europe. It is as stunning inside as it is on the outside, so it is no surprise why it draws so much attention and why it has also become a filmmaker’s favourite set design, making appearances in James Bond and Oceans Twelve.

Parts of the building are open to tourists every morning, but if you want the full experience, you will have to stick around for when the gambling begins after 2pm and dress to impress.

The F1 Racetrack

The Monaco Grand Prix is the state’s most notable event, and its Formula One circuit lies at the heart of the city for all to admire. A mere 3.3km long, the track is the perfect place for wandering, so get ready to get your steps in and walk the historic route.

If you are planning a trip for the third week of May, why not try to buy tickets to see all the action?

Changing Of The Guard At Place du Palais

One of the most underrated things to do in Monaco is exploring the Old Town and taking in the views of the 13th-century fortress while watching the traditional changing of the guard that takes place every morning from 11:55am.

Le Metropole Shopping Centre

Where else in the world is it considered normal to have crystal chandeliers hanging over you in a mall? Le Metropole consists of three floors linked by sweeping staircases that would genuinely fit right in within a luxury cruise liner or 5-star hotel. If you make your trip to Monaco in the summer, there is so better place to escape the heat and have fun window shopping at the 80 beautiful boutiques including designer brands such as Phillipp Pleine, Kenzo and Blumarine, or more affordable high-end, high-street names such as Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss.

Port Hercule

If you want to see what uber-luxury looks like, head over to Port Hercules, the only deep-water port in Monaco. Having been in use since ancient times, the modern port we see today was revamped throughout the 20th century and now covers almost 40 acres to hold a vast variety of private yachts and cruise ships.

To my surprise the port was incredibly quiet despite visiting in mid-July and on a Sunday. It was a lovely place to escape the casino crowds and grab drinks under cabanas, but this serene atmosphere could have all been pure luck.

Head To The Viewpoints

Monaco is blessed with an amazing location by the Mediterranean, so there are multiple viewpoints in the city offering panoramic paradise of the rich scenes below.

HSH The Prince of Monaco’s Vintage Car Collection

Technically, this is not one of the fabulous free things to do in Monaco, but the museum is affordable to visit. With almost 100 classic cars, Formula One race cars, and rare pink Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupé, Monaco’s Vintage Car Collection is pretty precious and is an attraction to admire even if you’re not all that interested in automobiles.

Tickets cost 5 euros for children under 17 and 10 euros for adults.
