Algarve Itinerary: From Albufeira To Almancil And Beyond
The 150 km long coastline depicting Portugal’s southernmost point is one of the most stunning parts of Europe. Here, Mediterranean vacations come to life through golden beaches, dramatic rock formations, beautiful nature parks and impressive architecture. As such, any good Algarve itinerary would be bursting with attractions and activities to explore and indulge in – sometimes meaning you could spend up to two weeks here unearthing all the beauty on offer. However, most of us don’t have that much time, so I’m happy to share 5 beautiful cities in Algarve that you can explore in 4 days and discover everything from the hidden gems to the most popular tourist spots.
This gorgeous seafront region got its name during its five centuries under Muslim rule. In Arabic, the strategic geographic location that was a maritime power was referred to as Al-Gharb al-Andalus (translation: the west of Andalusia). It then received its Portuguese name when the area was taken into the Portuguese kingdom in 1189 but retained many of its Moorish characterises as evidenced by the surviving architecture.
From Albufeira To Almancil, find a traveller’s paradise where picturesque settings stretch from the sunny coast to the lush mountains, and charming fishing villages and historic old town cities will have your heart begging you to leave the rest of the world behind in favour of laidback lifestyles. There is truly something special about a destination that gives you endless wonderment and highlights your sense of wander no matter the season. So, let’s jump right in a figure out your perfect Algarve itinerary if you only have a few days here but hope to see more than just a resort pool.
Figuring Out Your Itinerary For Exploring Algarve In Four Days
Faro (day one)
The capital of the Algarve, Faro, is the only right place to kick-start your adventure. Although not as popular when compared to the likes of Albufeira and Lagos, the beauty of the city and its striking natural features is unmatched anywhere in Portugal. The unrated reality of Faro is what made me fall in love with it. Spending time here, especially in the offseason, makes you feel like you are just as part of everyday life as the locals – it’s a beautiful feeling.
In its small size, you can explore all of Faro in just a few hours, so make sure you have your most comfortable shoes on, grab your camera and head out to a world of historic architecture, delicious cuisine and impressive hiking trails.
Top attractions in Faro:
- Cidade Velha and Arco da Villa
- Carmo Church
- Ria Formosa Nature Park and the barrier islands
- Capela Dos Ossos
Carvoeiro (day two)
Although historically unspared from frequent pirate and military assaults, Carvoeiro has over-time, evolved into a fabulous beach town characterised by its cluster of whitewashed buildings sprawling atop gold-tinged cliffs as they rise steeply from the ocean edge, while the panoramic distance is decorated by gentle hills.
About a 45-minute drive from Faro, take yourself to a beach town thriving through an economy centred on tourism and admire a place that hosts some of Portugal’s most iconic beaches and other natural features. Spend your day sunbathing on soft sand, kayaking through theatrical caves and hiking over picturesque cliffs to satisfy your adventurous spirit while also giving yourself space to relax and rejuvenate. You truly receive the very best of water and land here.
Top attractions in Carvoeiro:
- Benagil Sea Cave
- Seven Hanging Valley’s Trail
- Praia da Marinha
- Praia do Carvalho
Albufeira (day three)
A former fishing village turned holiday hotspot, Albufeira is perhaps the most popular city and liveliest resort town in the Algarve. Perched on a hill overlooking the ocean, the scenic city centre and the old town are framed by white cobblestone streets and epic viewpoints that marvel at the surrounding beaches below.
However, what makes Albufeira top any Algarve itinerary, more than the incredible nature and architecture, is the vibrant nightlife. This is where to be if you are searching for a party. As the sun sets, wander down to the seafront restaurants, bars, and clubs along The Strip to eat, drink and dance the night away under the shimmering moonlight.
This is the perfect place for family vacations, friend groups, and bachelor/bachelorette parties, and is well-known for being a student-friendly holiday destination as well.
Top attractions in Albufeira:
- Praia dos Pescadores
- Praia de Sao Rafael
- The Strip and New Town
- Old Albufeira
Estoi (day four)
Located 20 minutes from Faro, the pretty little town of Estoi takes you into the mountains of the Algarve and displays some of the more rural aspects of this region. Wander colourful streets and marvel at terracotta roofs in a quiet atmosphere blessed by traditional life. As an ideal place to spend your morning, Estoi shows you how to appreciate simple beauties, history, and the joys of slowing down life amid the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world.
Top attractions in Estoi:
- Palácio de Estói
- Igreja Matriz de Estoi
- Ruínas Romanas de Milreu
Almancil (day four)
In the affluent Golden Triangle region, Almancil is not a typical destination for an Algarve itinerary due to its exclusivity, but this hidden gem charms those who visit. With its breathtaking architecture, botanical beauty, and selection of Michelin-star restaurants (the most of any other in the Algarve) it is hard not to fall in love with the town. Particularly if you are a golfer, foodie, or fan of the classic azulejo, you don’t want to give this a miss.
Top attractions in Almancil:
- Church of São Lourenço
- Michelin Star Restaurants: Henrique Leis, Gusto and Restaurante Cassa Velha
- Quinta Do Lago Golf Club
