Albania Riviera Road Trip: Everything You Must See and Do

Albania Riviera Road Trip

Over the past few years, Albania, and particularly the Albania Riviera, has drawn an allure amongst travellers seeking the untouched and far more peaceful parts of Europe. It’s a country alive with natural magnificence and immense serenity from the highest hilltops to the azure waters of the Ionian Sea, and saying that it’s a place packed with hidden gems is not an exaggeration – at least for now.

An Albania Riverian road trip is an adventure steeped in winding roads, stretches of lush countryside, and gorgeous coastal views – sometimes reminiscent of Portugal, Greece, and Italy – yet entirely unique to the incredible wonders of the region. It’s fascinating to be in a place that’s still growing into itself but also knows exactly what it is: raw and real.

Every sandy step and haphazard hike promises an unforgettable journey, so read on for the perfect guide to exploring the must-see destinations along the Albania Riviera.

Albania Riviera Road Trip

Break Down Of The Perfect Albania Riviera Road Trip

Tirana: the perfect base to start and end your trip, especially if you are flying into the country.

Berat City: ideal for inland exploration and breaks up the drive from Tirana to Sarande.

Sarande: as the capital of the Albania Riviera, this is the liveliest place along the route, so often serves as the best place to stay as you explore attractions north and south of the city.

Ksamil: this Albania village contains approximately 100km of unspoilt shoreline and historic ruins – bringing together history, culture, and outdoor adventure in the most beautiful way.

Himare: a fishing village turned dynamic town where sparkling turquoise waters and hidden coves make you never want to leave.

Vlore: head over for a day out on the water and a visit to Sazan Island.

Duress: only 30 minutes from Tirana and paradise for vibrant sunsets, this is an ideal location to end a road trip.

Travel and Accommodation On The Albania Riviera

While you can join tour groups to explore the Albania Riviera, the best way to fully immerse in everything that is on offer is by hiring a car. You can book cars from right outside the Tirana Airport’s arrivals terminal – but I recommend booking them well in advance to ensure you can get your hands on one.

Accommodation along the Albania Riviera is sparse, but here is what I recommend:

  • Tirana: Hotel Elior
  • Sarande: Hotel Lili 2
  • Himare: Sonar En El Mar / Rea Boutique Hotel / Geo & Art Boutique Hotel
  • Duress: Hotel Arvi

Things To Do And Places To Visit On Your Albania Riviera Road Trip

TIRANA (1 NIGHT)

While Tirana is not the most exciting place in Albania, its blend of Ottoman, Italian, and communist-era influences creates a unique cultural tapestry and the perfect base for exploring the rest of the country. A night here is more than enough time to wander the colourful streets of the Blloku district, try out the trendy cafes and explore the few, fun attractions on display.

Visiting Skanderbeg Square, named after the national hero who briefly ensured Albania was independent of the Ottoman Empire in the fifteenth century, is one of the top things to do in Tirana. As you explore the open space, you will soon come across one of the nation’s most treasured buildings – the Et’hem Bey Mosque. Standing tall in all its eighteenth-century glory, the religious and historic site holds a mirror to Albanian’s fascinating past.

Also situated here are the nation’s major museums, including The National Historic Museum, adorned with a large socialist mural of victorious partisans.

Unlike those of ancient Egypt, the Piramida of Tirana was built in 1987 by the daughter of Albania’s dictator Enver Hoxha (who ruled tyrannically between 1944–85) as a museum to her father. It now sits neglected, stripped of the tiles, and splattered with graffiti. There is talk of demolishing it, but some argue that it should be kept intact as a monument to Stalinism’s ugly spirit.

Albania is famed for its nature, so it’s no surprise that one of the best things to do in Tirana is to escape into the trees of Mount Dajti National Park. It is popular with Tirana’s residents for its fresh air and countryside walks, and you can reach it by cable car or the city bus.

BERAT CITY (DAY TRIP)

The “City of a Thousand Windows”, a.k.a. “The Museum City”, Berat is a historic treat at the heart of Albania. Its timeless beauty lies in the enchanting blend of Ottoman, Byzantine, and Albanian architectural styles that adorn its winding cobblestone streets and cascade down the hillside. Particularly famed for its iconic white Ottoman houses, stacked like layers of history upon the slopes of the Tomorr Mountains along the shimmering Osum River, the city is a beacon for travellers to immerse in a rich during the long drive between Tirana and Sarande.

Don’t forget to make time to visit Berat’s ancient castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site that stands as a silent sentinel overlooking the city, its medieval walls and ancient towers steeped in legend and lore.

SARANDE (2 NIGHTS)

As the capital of the Albania Riviera, Sarande is a bustling port city that gives way to a lively atmosphere and a wealth of fantastic attractions – some of which date back to the Roman era! There is much to fall in love from the dazzling sights of the Blue Eye Nature Reserve to the imposing Lekuresi Castle, but even in its popularity, Sarande remains chill and charming.

The heart of every European port city is its boulevard, and Sarande is no different! Lined with palm trees and vibrant restaurants and offering stunning sea views, Hasan Tahsini Boulevard lets you immerse in the local lifestyle – and is the perfect place to grab dinner and drinks after a long day exploring!

Dating back to the 16th century, this ancient fortress offers a glimpse into Albania’s past while providing a stunning backdrop for exploration and relaxation along the sparkling waters of the Ionian Sea. From its vantage point, visitors can marvel at a breathtaking coastline, reach out to the nearby Greek island of Corfu, and witness the expanse of the rugged Albanian countryside. Whether you’re drawn to its historical significance, its architectural marvels, or simply seeking a serene spot to take in the beauty of the region, Lekuresi Castle promises an unforgettable experience.

Highlighted within the verdant landscapes of Sarande, The Blue Eye Nature Reserve is undeniably one of the best things to see in Albania. Named after its crystalline, turquoise natural spring that is fed by underground streams and resembles a giant eye, you will find a setting of mesmerizing clarity and vibrant hues. As sunlight filters through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the water’s surface, the reserve provides an oasis from the hustle and bustle of city life – just make sure to  visit in the early morning before it’s packed with tourists!

How long is the hike around The Blue Eye? Roughly 2 hours if you stop for pictures.

Can you swim in The Blue Eye? As of recently, no.

KSAMIL (DAY TRIP)

No visit to the Albania Riviera would be complete without a stop in Ksamil, a picture-perfect coastal village renowned for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Only 30 minutes from Sarande, this little paradise offers a day trip filled with history, culture, and connections with nature that will keep you wanting more. Whether it’s the bright blues or the dark greens, every turn brings a palate of Earth’s most exquisite features.

If there is one thing Albania is known for, it’s the incredible beaches. Aptly named after the mirror-like waters that reflect the sky above, Mirror Beach is an idyllic slice of paradise for those chasing peace. Soft, powdery sands stretch along the shoreline, inviting visitors to bask in the warm Mediterranean sun or plunge into the cool waters.

Butrint National Park is a treasure trove of ancient ruins and natural beauty. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts 2500 years of history, with remnants of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian civilizations scattered throughout the park. Wander through the impressive archaeological site, where crumbling temples, theatres, and fortifications offer glimpses into the region’s grand past while also exploring diverse ecosystems encompassing lush forests, wetlands, and pristine coastline.

HIMARE (1 NIGHT)

Arguably the most beautiful part of the Albania Riviera is Himare. Nestled between rugged cliffs that plunge into the azure waters of the Ionian Sea and filled with quaint villages perch atop verdant hills, Himare’s picturesque haven feels trapped in an oil painting, but exudes an invitation to be discovered. The charm of its cobblestone streets lined with colourful bougainvillaea and ancient olive trees transports visitors to a bygone era, where time seems to slow down. The crystalline beaches, framed by jagged cliffs and lush vegetation, are perfect for unwinding and set a tone of tranquillity that many of us crave.

As you drive along the winding coastal motorway into Himare, your first glimpse of civilisation will be of the fascinating, semi-abandoned village of Upper Qeparo. Peeking out behind the trees and towering over Qeparo Beach, its hard not miss in all its traditional Albanian glory. The village is a small piece of the Albanian Riviera where time has stood still while resorts and fancy beach clubs below are multiplying by the minute, so its the perfect place more a quick stop if you want to marvel at the views and enjoy a slower pace of life.

Although the castles and forts along the Albania Riviera are not preserved like those of Greece and Italy, they are a true reflection of the passage of time. As nature reclaims the walls, Himare Castle is a must-visit for its panoramic views and fascinating seclusion.

Concealed around the corner from busy Jale Beach, Aquarium Beach is one of the most picturesque of its kind along the Albanian Riviera. It is technically a cove, rather than a large stretch of beach, so the rocky coastline on both sides of the narrow, calm bay creates a dreamy setting perfect for swimmers.

A personal favorite for tourists in Albania who don’t like to be called tourists is Aquarium Beach. It is concealed around the corner from busy Jale and typically reached on foot. Without question, Aquarium Beach is one of the most picturesque beaches in Himarë, let alone the entire Albanian Riviera. It’s mostly unique for being a cove, rather than a large stretch of beach. The rugged coastline on both sides of the narrow bay creates a dreamy scene, and the water remains calm for swimmers as it is sheltered by the rocks.

Accessible only by boat or a scenic hike, the secluded shores of Gjipe Beach are a sanctuary for disconnecting from the rest of the world. The beach’s crescent shape is adorned with golden sands lapped by crystal-clear waters and surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, creating a dramatic backdrop that is easy to fall in love with. Its no surprise why it’s considered the best beach in the country!

Few would consider the Albania Riviera as a place for viticulture, but if you can infuse your road trip with something unique, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Kantina & Ferma Dukar Vineyard, where you can sample local wines and farm-to-table dishes amidst stunning mountain scenery.

Vlore (DAY TRIP)

Cradled between the towering peaks of the Ceraunian Mountains and the shimmering expanse of the Adriatic Sea, Vlore is perhaps Himare’s more outgoing, more popular, twin sister. Its stunning blend of natural wonders and historical charm capitates all who wander its streets and hop aboard a boat to marvel at the shoreline. In the gentle sea breeze, you can hear the whispers of Vlore’s rich heritage and storied past – spanning the remains of castles to the abandoned islands. As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of crimson and gold, Vlore transforms into a romantic setting where nature and history intertwine, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to experience its allure.

Since there’s not much to do in Vlore itself, hop aboard a boat to sail to different beaches and visit the off-the-beaten paths of Sazan Island. Once a restricted military zone, Sazan Island has recently opened its doors to visitors, offering a glimpse into its intriguing past and stunning landscapes. History enthusiasts can explore the island’s military bunkers, tunnels, and fortifications, which tell the story of its strategic importance throughout the centuries. Nature lovers will be captivated by the island’s diverse marine life creating a perfect space for snorkelling and diving adventures.

Duress (1 NIGHT)

End your Albania Riviera road trip in the ancient Greek city of Duress, dating back to the 6th century BCE. As you savour flavours at the waterfront restaurants and enjoy sweet drinks, let the sun set, casting a golden glow over the Adriatic horizon, and revel in the light that shows off the region’s greatness. It is the perfect way to end your adventure and hold onto the magic of the past few days.

How perfect is this! My husband and I are planning our honeymoon and we’re thinking of going to Albania. I haven’t started planning anything yet so it’s been a little overwhelming. How would you say the hike around Blue Eye? I’m on crutches trying to decide if it would be accessible for me.

    • Sanika Shah

Oh how lovely! Albania would be so perfect and unique for such a trip. The hike around the Blue Eye is beautiful and honestly pretty easy – it took us about 2 hours to explore the area. If you’re on crutches, you’ll still be able to visit because there’s a ‘train’ type of service near the parking lot that can take you to the main point of the spring so you don’t have to walk😊

Stunning photos! Albania has never been on my list, but after reading this blog I am definitely adding it. I am particularly intrigued by The Blue Eye Nature Reserve!

    • Sanika Shah

I genuinely believe that’s most people’s favourite part of Sarande and for good reason! Its so beautiful💙

My husband proposed we should go on holiday in Albania because it’s pretty more affordable compared to most parts of Europe but I convinced him we should first go to Portugal but seeing the views , I think we’ll also do Albania soon. I’m also guessing its much less crowded there. Saving this article for my next trip. Thank you.

    • Sanika Shah

Its absolutely a more understated part of Europe, but I would highly recommend Albania over Portugal so you can escape the crowds and still have access to some of the most beautiful beaches on the continent!
